Schakelkasten installeren: netjes, veilig en goed geventileerd – ook buiten

Whether you're setting up a camera system, solar panel system, or network infrastructure, a switch cabinet is essential for a neat, safe, and durable finish. Switch cabinets protect your equipment from dust, moisture, vandalism, and heat. In this article, you'll learn all about choosing, installing, and ventilating switch cabinets—both indoors and outdoors.

1. What is a switch cabinet and what do you use it for?

A control cabinet (also called a control cabinet or enclosure) is a sealed enclosure that safely houses electrical and electronic components. Think of power supplies, fuses, relays, network equipment, charge controllers, or inverters.

Applications:

  • Camera surveillance (NVR, switch, power supply)

  • Off-grid energy (charge controller, inverter, fuses)

  • Networks (patch panels, routers, PoE injectors)

  • Access control (relays, power supplies, controllers)

A good switch cabinet ensures a clear and safe installation that will last a long time.

2. Indoor or outdoor? Choose the right cabinet

Indoor use:

  • IP20 or IP30 is often sufficient (against dust)

  • Metal or plastic

  • Security with lock or screw

Outdoor use or damp areas:

  • Minimum IP65 (dust and waterproof)

  • UV-resistant plastic or stainless steel (SS)

  • Good seal with rubber sealing strip

  • Option for rain cover or wall bracket

UMATECH Tip: Our waterproof outdoor enclosures with mounting plate and cable glands are ideal for camera masts or access control systems.

3. Format and layout

The dimensions of the cabinet depend on:

  • Number of components

  • Space for cable management

  • Any cooling or ventilation

Please note:

  • Sufficient space between components (heat!)

  • Possibility to expand later

  • Clear separation between 230V and low current

Use DIN rails, mounting plates or blanking plates for neat and stable placement of components.

4. Ventilation and cooling: don't underestimate it

Electronics generate heat, especially in closed cabinets. Overheating leads to malfunctions or failures.

Cooling solutions:

  • Ventilation grilles with filters (against dust)

  • Miniature fans (12V/24V)

  • Active cooling modules for intensive use or outdoors in the sun

For outdoor cabinets:

  • Mount them in the shade or use sunshade

  • Choose white or reflective housing

  • Leave sufficient space around sensitive equipment

UMATECH supplies ready-made ventilation kits for control cabinets.

5. Connection and wiring: neat and safe

A cluttered closet is not only unprofessional but also unsafe. Therefore, always work neatly and with the right tools.

Practical tips:

  • Use cable glands (PG/M20) for waterproof cable entry

  • Label all cables and connections

  • Use cable trays or spiral tape for bundling

  • Terminate power lines with clamps or terminal blocks

  • Install fuses or circuit breakers per circuit

Grounding:

  • Always earth metal cabinets

  • Use a separate earth rail if you work with 230V

6. Switch boxes on camera masts and outside walls

For camera surveillance or intercom systems mounted on a pole or outside wall, a robust control box is essential. Consider:

  • Switch cabinet with IP65 protection

  • Mounting with stainless steel brackets or internal bracket

  • Space for power supply, switch and possibly a 4G router

UMATECH WL4 poles are compatible with universal outdoor cabinets and equipped with gland holes for wiring.

7. Accessories and additional options

Consider the following accessories for your installation:

  • DIN rail power supplies

  • Time relays or timers

  • RJ45 coupler blocks or network cable glands

  • Temperature sensors with fan trigger

At UMATECH, you can order ready-made switch cabinets with cable glands, DIN rail, and cable entry. Feel free to inquire about the possibilities.

8. Maintenance and inspection

Even a good installation needs maintenance:

  • Check annually for moisture, dust and insects

  • Test fans and filters

  • Check whether the wiring is still properly secured

  • Replace damaged unions or seals

An annual check is recommended, especially when used outdoors.

9. Summary

A well-chosen and correctly installed switch cabinet:

  • Protects your installation against weather, dust and overheating.

  • Provides clarity and safety

  • Increases the reliability of your system

When using outdoors, consider waterproofing, ventilation, and sun exposure. Work neatly, use the correct accessories, and inspect regularly.
